Dr. F. Winston Gwathmey is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty certification in sports medicine. He recently joined NYU Langone Health to lead its hip preservation and hip arthroscopy program, and also treats knee and shoulder conditions.
Meet Dr. Gwathmey
I recently joined the NYU Langone Department of Orthopaedic Surgery to lead its hip preservation and hip arthroscopy program. I care for people with hip, knee, and shoulder problems, from competitive athletes to active adults who simply want to move without pain.
For more than a decade, I practiced at the University of Virginia, where I built the hip arthroscopy program into one of the busiest in the region, performing more than 200 arthroscopic hip procedures per year. I served as a team physician for UVA athletics, caring for Division I athletes in basketball, baseball, lacrosse, and football. I also led UVA’s orthopaedic residency program, and I regularly teach hip arthroscopy techniques to other surgeons at national courses. My patients have recognized me with multiple Outstanding Patient Experience Awards, and I have been named to Best Doctors in America.
My training includes residency at UVA, a sports medicine and shoulder fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard Medical School, and hip arthroscopy fellowship training in Nashville.
I believe the right treatment starts with listening. Many hip, knee, and shoulder problems get better without surgery. Together, we will review your diagnosis, talk through every option, and choose the plan that fits your goals, whether that’s returning to your sport or getting through your day comfortably.

My approach
“Not every injury needs surgery. Good care begins with a thoughtful diagnosis, an open discussion of your options, and a plan tailored to your life and goals.”
A careful evaluation of your symptoms, examination, and imaging when indicated.
A balanced discussion of rehabilitation, nonsurgical care, and surgery where appropriate.
Individualized treatment and recovery expectations, with guidance throughout.

Patient education
Hip impingement may cause groin pain, stiffness, or catching. Treatment often begins with activity changes and focused physical therapy. Hip arthroscopy may be considered in selected patients with persistent symptoms.

Learn more at NYU LangoneTwisting injuries can damage knee ligaments or cartilage. Treatment depends on instability, injury pattern, activity demands, and other factors. Options include rehabilitation and, in appropriate cases, reconstruction or repair.
